June 2008 Park Programs
Ohio State Parks Layoffs: Due to a Hocking Hills State Park Naturalist layoff, this schedule has changed on June 04, 2008 to reflect the layoff. Please note the changes below.
June 1
10:00 AM *CEDAR FALLS STROLL - Join the naturalist to explore Cedar Falls and discover the unique natural and cultural history of this area of the park.
2:00 PM NATURALIST CABIN “OPEN” - Join the naturalist down at the Naturalist Cabin located behind the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center to explore and ask questions.
June 4,
10:00 AM * WEEKLY 5-STAR HIKE SERIES; Old Man’s Cave– Each week we pick a new location to explore. Meet at the visitor center.
June 6
2:00 PM FURS, FEATHERS, FEET & FANGS – Join the naturalist at the Naturalist Cabin to discover the many special wildlife adaptations and discuss how to search for signs of the many species here at Hocking Hills
7:00 PM *ROSE LAKE CANOE EXCURSION – Join the naturalist and the ‘HOCKING HILLS CANOE LIVERY’ for a naturalist guided trip around Rose Lake. The trip will take approx. 1 hour and will cover many aspects of canoeing safely while we search the lake for wildlife. Space is limited so you must pre-register at the camp office prior to the event! We will meet at the dam at Rose Lake.

**Hike the Gorge for National Trail Day
Saturday June 7, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Bring along a cool drink and join Hocking Hills State Park and the Buckeye Trail Association to celebrate National Trail Day. Meet with the Hocking Hills naturalist & Robert Pond (author of “Follow the Blue Blazes”) from Buckeye Trail at the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center. We’ll take a strenuous hike that spans roughly 6 miles of the Grandma Gatewood/Buckeye Trail. We will be traversing the section that runs from Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls and back while enjoying the scenic beauty and cultural personality. This hike does include several hills and steps and is not recommended for the easily winded individual. (Approx. 3to4 hrs).
Don’t feel up to 6 miles? Well then, please join us for the first mile through Old Man’s gorge and we’ll make sure you get back to the Visitor Center.
2:00 PM *SURVIVAL OHIO STYLE – Come to the naturalist cabin and put your skills to the test. Or, just come and cheer on your favorite team!
4:00 PM *INCREDIBLE INSECTS – Walk, creep, dig or fly. We’ll explore them all at the campground amphitheater.
9:00 PM MOVIES in the CAMPGROUND - Come to the amphitheater located near the pool area and main shower house in the campground and enjoy a family fun movie under the stars.
June 13
10:00 AM*THE WONDERS of OLD MAN’S CAVE - Meet the naturalist at the Naturalist Cabin for a short hike and discover some facts about the history of the area and the rock formations that are found throughout the park.
June 14
1:00 PM HOCKING’S BIRDS OF PREY - Join the naturalist at the Naturalist Cabin for a closer look at Ohio’s winged predators.
9:00 PM *HAUNTED HOCKING: Spirits of Lake Alma – Is Lake Alma really haunted or could it be something else? Join the naturalist at the Lake Alma shelter house to explore the possibilities. (This program does contain ghost stories…parents; you know your children best and should decide if it is appropriate. (Please, no pets at Haunted Hocking.)
June 15
10:00 AM *SCALAWAGS & RENEGADES - The Ohio Frontier was full of heroes and shady characters. Meet at the Shelter House at the Rock House to hike and explore our local history.

2:00 PM *FAMILY NATURE ADVENTURES – Bring the whole family and join the naturalist for a hands-on exploration of our natural world. Meet at the Naturalist Cabin located behind the Old Man’s Cave visitor center. Each day brings a new adventure!
9:00 PM *ASH CAVE NIGHT HIKE - Take a stroll under towering Hemlocks as the magic of twilight settles on the Hocking Forests. Meet at the parking area for Ash Cave. (Please, no pets at the night hike.)
June 20
10:00 AM *“RIDGETOPS & HOLLERS” - Ever wonder about the difference between a ridgetop and a ‘holler’? Join the naturalist at Ash Cave Parking area to find out.
2:00 PM *FAMILY NATURE ADVENTURES – See the 19th for a description.
June 21
2:00 PM NATURALIST CABIN “OPEN” - Join the naturalist down at the Naturalist Cabin located behind the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center to explore and ask questions.
4:00 PM *JEWELED DRAGONS – Join the naturalist for a closer look at Hocking’s not so mythical dragonflies & damselflies. These flying, crawling & swimming insects lead an amazing life that we can peek in on. Meet at the main playground in the camp (near site# 143) for a short stroll down to Rose Lake.
9:00 PM MOVIES in the CAMPGROUND - Come to the amphitheater located near the pool area and main shower house in the campground and enjoy a family fun movie under the stars.
June 25
10:00 AM * WEEKLY 5-STAR HIKE SERIES; Cedar Falls – Each week we pick a new location to explore. Meet at the Cedar Falls trailhead.

9:00 PM *HISTORIC LANTERN TOUR of ASH CAVE- The mystery of Ash Cave is special as far back as the last Ice Age and beyond. Join the naturalist in the parking lot area to explore Ash Cave by lantern light and learn this special history first hand. We supply the lights…you supply the imagination. (Please no pets at the lantern tour)

9:00 PM CAMPFIRE ON THE EXPEDITION TRAIL – Bring along a lawn chair or blanket and come share in the fun!!

8:00 AM *FISHING AT ROSE LAKE – Meet the naturalist at Rose Lake Dam to try your luck at hooking a lunker in some of Rose Lake’s Fishing “Hot Spots”. Never been fishing before?We’ll gladly show you how.
