Join with Wayne National Forest biologist, Lynda Andrews, in viewing birds along the Hocking River corridor. The hike will begin at the Glen Ebon (Co. Rd. 4) intersection and proceed north toward Nelsonville. Hiking along the river through cliff faces, mature forest and agricultural fields offers the possibility of viewing a variety of birds. County Road 4 is located by turning west off of U.S. Hwy 33 at Duplers Home Sales (between Nelsonville and The Plains). Parking is available after crossing the bridge.

We will have a short talk and demonstration on fly-fishing equipment and techniques for the beginner.

Hocking Hills Expedition Trail (Located behind the state park office) – Do you enjoy bird watching? 88 million Americans do. Want to be a better birder or perfect your skills? Then this is the program for you. Based on many college level introduction to Ornithology courses this is a great way to be a better birder without all the pressure and cost. Join the naturalist and members of the Hocking Valley Birding Trail to explore “hands on” the many fascinating aspects of our avian friends. Everything from bird sight & sound identification, bird behavior and even building a better feeding station is covered. This program is great for the long time birder, the beginner or just the family that loves to hike together.
*CB - Attend any 3 birding programs (marked with a *CB) this spring/summer and receive a certified birder patch (While supplies last).
2:00 PM *CB HOCKING’S BIRDS OF PREY- Join the naturalist at the Naturalist Cabin for a closer look at Ohio’s hawks, owls, eagles and vultures. Naturalist Cabin will remain “OPEN” to explore and ask questions.

6:30 PM WOODCOCK WATCH – Is this just another “snipe hunt”? No. What is an American Woodcock and why would I want to watch one? Well…this bird has one of the most elaborate courtship rituals of many of Ohio’s avian friends and one of the most intriguing to observe. Bring along a pair of binoculars and meet the naturalist in the Conkle’s Hollow parking lot to find out. (Unfortunately, this bird is weather-dependent so keep your fingers crossed for clear skies.)
