1:00 PM - Saturday Birders Reception at Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center Join with members of the Hocking Valley Birding Trail to explore, plan future birding outings and get tips for your next birding excursion. Many of the local birding location hosts will be on hand to answer any questions and offer help with your next outing.

8:00 AM Bird Hike on the HockHocking Adena Bikeway
Join with Wayne National Forest biologist, Lynda Andrews, in viewing birds along the Hocking River corridor. The hike will begin at the Glen Ebon (Co. Rd. 4) intersection and proceed north toward Nelsonville. Hiking along the river through cliff faces, mature forest and agricultural fields offers the possibility of viewing a variety of birds. County Road 4 is located by turning west off of U.S. Hwy 33 at Duplers Home Sales (between Nelsonville and The Plains). Parking is available after crossing the bridge.

Hocking Hills Expedition Trail (Located behind the state park office) – Do you enjoy bird watching? 88 million Americans do. Want to be a better birder or perfect your skills? Then this is the program for you. Based on many college level introduction to Ornithology courses this is a great way to be a better birder without all the pressure and cost. Join the naturalist and members of the Hocking Valley Birding Trail to explore “hands on” the many fascinating aspects of our avian friends. Everything from bird sight & sound identification, bird behavior and even building a better feeding station is covered. This program is great for the long time birder, the beginner or just the family that loves to hike together.

6:30 PM WOODCOCK WATCH – Is this just another “snipe hunt”? No. What is an American Woodcock and why would I want to watch one? Well…this bird has one of the most elaborate courtship rituals of many of Ohio’s avian friends and one of the most intriguing to observe. Bring along a pair of binoculars and meet the naturalist in the Conkle’s Hollow parking lot to find out. (Unfortunately, this bird is weather-dependent so keep your fingers crossed for clear skies.)

Space is limited so you must pre-register at the camp office prior to the event! We will meet at the dam at Rose Lake.

**Hike the Gorge for National Trail Day
Saturday June 7, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Bring along a cool drink and join Hocking Hills State Park and the Buckeye Trail Association to celebrate National Trail Day. Meet with the Hocking Hills naturalist & Robert Pond (author of “Follow the Blue Blazes”) from Buckeye Trail at the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center. We’ll take a strenuous hike that spans roughly 6 miles of the Grandma Gatewood/Buckeye Trail. We will be traversing the section that runs from Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls and back while enjoying the scenic beauty and cultural personality. This hike does include several hills and steps and is not recommended for the easily winded individual. (Approx. 3to4 hrs).
Don’t feel up to 6 miles? Well then, please join us for the first mile through Old Man’s gorge and we’ll make sure you get back to the Visitor Center.
2:00 PM *SURVIVAL OHIO STYLE – Come to the naturalist cabin and put your skills to the test. Or, just come and cheer on your favorite team!
4:00 PM *INCREDIBLE INSECTS – Walk, creep, dig or fly. We’ll explore them all at the campground amphitheater.

Hocking Hills - A Cool Summer Retreat

The air is a hot 92 degrees. And it's an Ohio hot. It's the kind of hot mixed with muggy dampness something akin to the initial breath of clammy air you get when you stick your head over a pot of simmering spaghetti noodles. Scorching. Humid. And painfully uncomfortable.
Nothing seems to want to budge on either side of the black asphalt covering of the State Route 664 that takes us through Hocking Hills State Park . The leaves are in shock and simply droop green and saggy in the summer heat. The grass is browning with every beat of the sun.
But there is one place, nearly hidden beneath the horizon of trees offering a bit of escape from an Ohio summer afternoon. Old Man’s Cave.
It is nothing more than a deep pocket of earth, an erosion of sand left over from the ocean once covering Ohio; a bowl dug out of the earth and filled with cracks, fissures and grooves. But in describing it as such, we take away the beauty of the extraordinary plant life shoved ahead of the glaciers and left tucked into this tiny part of Ohio. Huge Hemlocks, Black Birch and Canada Yew mingle in the depths of the cool interior of the recess cave. In the center of the cave, a creek runs steadily and cascades into several beautiful waterfalls.
It is a tiny oasis in the middle of a hot summer. It is a place to visit, tucked between a innumerable other places to hike away a boring afternoon like Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Rock House and Conkle’s Hollow. It is a wonderful place to visit for the day or even as an overnight stay.

Take I-71 South to Columbus.Take 270 East toward Wheeling, WV to U.S. 33 East (Lancaster Exit)Travel East to Logan, Exit on 664 South.
From Columbus, Ohio:Take U.S. 33 East through Lancaster to Logan, Ohio and exit onto State Route 664 South
From Cincinnati, Ohio:Take I-71 North towards Columbus.Watch for and take State Route 56 East through Mt. Sterling.Continue on State Route 56 East through Circleville and Laurelville to South Bloomingville, Ohio.In South Bloomingville take State Route 664 North approximately 4 miles to the park.
From Toledo, Ohio:Take I –75 South to Findlay, get on State Route 23 to Columbus.Take I-270 East towards Wheeling to U.S. 33 East (Lancaster Exit).Travel East to the Logan, Exit 664 South.
